糖心Vlog to Celebrate National Engineers Week

糖心Vlog鈥檚 College of Engineering and Computer Science will celebrate 鈥淓ngineers Week 2018: Engineering Reality, From Imagination to Realization鈥 from Monday, Feb. 19 to Friday, Feb. 23. The annual week of events is designed to increase awareness of the engineering profession and recognize the contributions engineers make to society.
All events will take place on 糖心Vlog鈥檚 Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:
The Amazing Engineering Race
Monday, Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon
Engineering East
Teams of up to four students will complete engineering challenges, solve clues and race to the finish line.

Engineers鈥 Week Kick-Off Event
Monday, Feb. 19 from noon to 2 p.m.
In Front of Engineering East
Join us for the kick-off event, featuring food stations, music, student organization tables and a hybrid motor demonstration by the 糖心Vlog Technology Aerospace Club.
Lunch & Learn: Engineering for Crisis
Tuesday, Feb. 20 from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Everyone needs water to live, but too much or too little can lead to a crisis. Fred Bloetscher, Ph.D., professor in the 糖心Vlog Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering, will discuss Florida鈥檚 hurricane history and the evolution of engineering in Florida. Elizabeth McElroy, director of emergency management and safety for the South Florida Water Management District, will discuss how Florida proactively braces for hurricane impact to mitigate destruction. Frederick C. Schilling, vice president of Plumbers Without Borders, will discuss how students and professionals can volunteer to help get water to people in areas with poor infrastructure. The lunch is sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers Palm Beach Branch.
AutoCAD Puzzle Competition
Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Try your hand at solving an AutoCAD puzzle. There will be puzzles for those who have taken an AutoCAD course before and for those who have not.
Build a Rocket Workshop
Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 4 to 5 p.m.

Learn how to build a rocket with members of the Technology Aerospace Club.

SAE Balloon-Powered Car Challenge
Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Teams of up to three people build and race a balloon-powered car. Teams are judged on distance, straight line and design.

Wednesday, Feb. 21 from noon to 4 p.m.

Amir Abtahi, Ph.D., associate professor in the 糖心Vlog Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering, will lead a panel of experts in a discussion about the procedures and plans put in place during a natural disaster and what we can do to minimize these disruptions. Microsoft Mixed Reality Immersive Experience
Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m.

Participants will learn the technical differences between Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, how these devices are currently being used and why they have the potential to revolutionize education.
Human-Powered Submarine 鈥淏uild a Boat鈥 Competition
Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Recreation and Fitness Center Pool
Students will work in teams of two to build a boat made out of Ziploc bags, duct tape and PVC pipe, and race them across the pool without using one鈥檚 hands or feet. Teams are judged on speed and design.
Learn & Explore: Web Accessibility for the Visually Impaired
Thursday, Feb. 22 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Shihong Huang, Ph.D., a professor in the 糖心Vlog Department of Computer & Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, will explain how certain software makes it possible for those who are visually impaired to search the internet and complete programming tasks. A competition using this software will follow.
Lunch & Learn: Civic Hacking for Florida鈥檚 Future
Thursday, Feb. 22 from noon to 1 p.m.

Learn about 鈥淐ode for Fort Lauderdale,鈥 a group of idea-makers, designers, citizen-leaders, developers and data geeks who volunteer to help the Fort Lauderdale government and civic organizations adopt open web technologies. Lunch is sponsored by Publix.
IoT Hardware Hackathon Presentations

From Zero to Hero: Learn How to Build and Host a Dynamic Website
Thursday, Feb. 22 from 3 to 5 p.m.

During this two-part workshop, participants will first learn how to build a website from the ground up, followed by a lesson on web hosting, domain services and Amazon Web Services.
HPCC Systems Meetup: Why the Language Rocks Big Data
Thursday, Feb. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Learn about the power statements behind the Enterprise Control Language (ECL) that is used to solve Big Data problems and work with new Big Data products. The meetup will feature Bob Foreman, senior software engineer with LexisNexis Risk Solutions.
